Thank you for taking time to visit the Wisconsin IoPP chapter website.
The chapter is here to assist professionals throughout Wisconsin to network and develop professionally in the packaging industry through events and educational opportunities.
We value different backgrounds and encourage you to be a part of our growing network. If you have any questions on how to become more active in our chapter or have ideas on events/activities, please visit our contact us page to get in touch with a board member or sign up for our newsletter.
Q2 2022 - Chapter Communications
Greetings Wisconsin Chapter IoPP members, affiliates and supporters!
We started our 2022 calendar of events with a social outing in March. The event was held at The Turn in Green Bay, WI. We had seven folks attend and we all enjoyed a quickly passing evening of fun and laughter and for some, like me, brushing up on our golf swing. I have to say the game simulation was as real as golf can be in WI in March as I found myself playing the screen course about the same way as a real one – thank goodness for the scramble format (and I hope my partners for the August IoPP outing don’t read these communications to closely 😉).
Congratulations goes out again to Chris DeJardin for his receipt of the College of Fellows Award which we presented at the March meeting. Thanks to everyone who attended the event and a special thank you to Andrea for making the arrangements (and flyer!).
As you may recall, I reached out in the Q1 newsletter asking for a volunteer to host our Q2 event. As a result, we are now able to put together our next meeting, an onsite tour, at Belmark Inc in De Pere, WI. Belmark manufactures pressure sensitive labels, flexible packaging and folding cartons for customers in a broad range of markets dedicated to bringing customers the creativity, energy and problem-solving to help build brands through innovative packaging solutions.
The meeting will take place on Thursday, May 5th, with registration and tour starting at 4:30PM. We will follow with dinner at Brickhouse Burgers & Brews at about 6:30PM. I’m sure we can have everything wrapped up and you can be on your way home by 8PM. The tour is sensitive to competitors, so please sign up to give ample opportunity to review with the host prior to the event. If you can’t make the tour and would like to join us at the Brickhouse, everyone is certainly welcome. Please do let us know though so we can provide them with a headcount ahead of time.
After our May meeting, our event focus will turn to the golf outing. This year’s golf outing is scheduled for Friday August 19th at Royal St Patrick’s in Wrightstown, WI. Please mark the date on your calendar and make plans now to join us. Like always you can plan on playing on a fantastic golf course along with a great opportunity for raffle and event competitions and support for our mission of generating money for packaging education. If you do not wish to play golf, there are several other ways for you to participate, such as; joining us for the post outing dinner, raffle tickets, and participating in the games held near the clubhouse throughout the day.
One of the most rewarding ways of contributing is by becoming a hole advertiser. We’ve tried to make being a hole advertiser as painless as possible for you as all you need to do is make the commitment and the leadership team will take it from there to get your sign on the course for the entire day of the event.
With the golf outing being our Q3 event, I’m ready to seek ideas for a Q4 event – it could be a social outing or onsite tour. If you have something in mind, please reach out to me and I will connect with you to explore the opportunity and timing. It would be really nice to host an upcoming meeting in the Milwaukee and Madison and central WI areas. So anyone with event ideas from those areas, please feel free to reach out to me and we’ll see if we can put something together.
In closing, I welcome you to sign up for our May meeting event, an onsite tour at Belmark in De Pere on May 5th. I’ll plan to see you there.
Chapter Communications 2022 Q1
Greetings Wisconsin Chapter IoPP members, affiliates and supporters!
I hope this communication finds you well and that your 2022 is off to a fantastic start. I missed a Q4-2021 separate communication, but I do have a few topics to cover for this quarter’s update, as follows;
We are planning for our next chapter event to take place on Thursday, March 24th. Andrea Manor is setting up this social event at The Turn in Green Bay. As you may recall, other than the golf outings in 2020 and 2021, an event at this facility was the last social outing our chapter had organized to take place in late spring 2020, but forced to cancel due to covid. So please put this date on your calendar, make plans to attend and get signed up early to help us with the planning. Please visit our event page here for more information.
The chapter established and funded two scholarships at UW Stout in December 2021. The first was our planned endowed scholarship which will provide an annual $1000 award to a senior-level student in the packaging program. This endowed scholarship has been the focus of the proceeds from our golf outings which received a boost from combining the WI based chapters (formerly Fox Valley and Wisconsin chapters). An endowed scholarship represents the support of the entire IoPP WI Chapter which by nature will last indefinitely!
Along with the endowed scholarship, the university identified a need to provide support for younger students being introduced to the packaging industry. Therefore our chapter also began funding two $500 scholarships to be awarded to sophomore-level students.
Both of these have been excellent opportunities for our chapter to provide leadership and support these students financially while opening up access to all the resources in our chapter. I’m certain this exposure and investment will pay dividends down the road when these folks enter the workforce after graduation and give back to the chapter by attending chapter events (golf outings) and becoming future chapter leaders.
I want to personally say thank you to every supporter, member, and affiliate to make this happen – congratulations to the entire chapter, what a great investment and accomplishment!
We have two chapter members who will be recognized for their roles within the IoPP - Wisconsin Chapter which will be presented at our March event/meeting.
Kyle Kozlowski will be presented with the Phi Alpha Kappa Award. This is a chapter level award which recognizes Kyle for his involvement and chairmanship of the annual golf outing. Aside from 2020, we’ve managed to grow the event year over year under Kyle’s leadership.
Chris DeJardin will receive a College of Fellows Award. This is a national award, conferred by the IoPP Board of Directors, presented to members with outstanding contributions and service to the field of packaging. This is a very prestigious award as Chris is among only three inductees for 2021.
Please join us to help congratulate Chris and Kyle on their deserving awards.
Chapter leadership would like to plan a plant tour event sometime in the months between April – June 2022 (in conjunction with our Q2 meeting) and are encouraging someone in the chapter membership to volunteer host their facility. The chapter will take care of the arrangements (dinner, communication, sign up, etc.) other than the tour, but request someone to volunteer their facility and assist with scheduling.
It has been quite some time we have been able to have tours at facilities and the chapter leadership would like to get a tour event on the calendar. Please reach out to Craig Hable or me if you can help (or know someone who would be interested in hosting a tour event) to schedule.
And finally, it is never too early to think about the 2022 golf outing! We will return to Royal St Patrick's again in 2022 with the event planned for Friday, August 19th. While it’s a bit too early to sign up, please save the date and start planning to attend this years event.
In closing, I hope to see you at the March event (please sign up early so we can plan accordingly) and reach out if you could help us put together a tour event for Q2-2022.
Until next time, continued best wishes for you and your family’s health and safety.
Kind Regards, Mike
Endowment & Scholarship News
The Chapter was able to fulfill our goal and commitment to begin an endowment fund and provide two $500 undergraduate scholarships at UW-Stout in Menomonie, WI in December 2021. Thank you to the efforts and kindness of the IoPP Wisconsin chapter member and supporters for making this happen. Our next goal is to continue to expand our scholarships efforts and provide more opportunities. Please consider supporting.
Chapter Communication - Q3 2021
Greetings again to all Wisconsin Chapter IoPP members, affiliates, and supporters!
I hope this communication finds you well. I wanted to cover a couple of topics for this quarter’s update and will get right into it.
First, I like to extend a very special Congratulations to Gary Konop who retired from Pentair this past April. I got to know Gary from our days in Iowa as we traveled the state together while leading and growing the Mississippi Valley IoPP Chapter. I have grown to know and admire Gary’s professionalism, his continued support of IoPP, and lasting dedication to the packaging field. I would like to thank Gary for his contributions, insights and just his courage for helping to get the chapters combined into what’s now known as a single WI chapter. Here’s to wishing Gary all the best in the future, health, happiness, and I hope you live your best life!
Secondly, “it’s not about the golf”. I’m hoping everyone knows by now that our annual golf outing will take place Friday, August 20th at beautiful Royal St Patrick’s in Wrightstown, WI. We’ve held the event at RSP for a few years now and keep coming back not only because of how smoothly the event is run, but also because both the course and clubhouse grounds are always kept in excellent condition. While the event is encompassed by golf, the focus is really on fund raising with the purpose to promote the packaging profession. We do this primarily through an annual scholarship to UW Stout. Congratulations goes out to the recipient of our 2021-2022 scholarship: Ms Maggie Kendhammer. Maggie is from LaCrosse, currently on her internship in California, and in her final year of school at UWS.
We will cross a milestone at this years event which is to fully fund the WI Chapter IoPP endowed scholarship. This requires north of a $30K contribution. In doing so, we will likely set records for participants and hole advertisers – maybe a better word choice is we will likely “shatter” previous records! How fun is it to acknowledge being a part of something this spectacular? And I sincerely hope we set another record next year! While we received some funding tailwind when we combined with the former WI chapter, the primary work completed to accomplish this goal was done through the annual golf outing. And while I say “it’s not about the golf”, it really is an event like this that brings us all together to support a very worthy cause. Please understand I personally am not a golfer, this being typically the only time I get my golf clubs out of closet for the year, but rest assured I won’t miss this annual event as “it’s not about the golf” for me!
Related to the golf outing, we took advantage of an opportunity to upgrade our website and pay mechanism (thanks in no small part to Eric Moe!). The look and feel of the checkout system is professional and will work well for us into the future for not only golf outings, but also for chapter meetings.
And speaking of chapter meetings, please earmark October for our next chapter event. Craig Hable is busy making arrangements for a plant tour at a package test facility in Appleton with dinner to follow at a local restaurant. Of course we’ll have more information following with related details (like actual dates and times and locations), but for now just earmark October as the timing for our next event after the August golf outing.
In closing, a huge thank you goes out to the golf planning committee who have dedicated several lunch hours, over the past 4 months, to make plans for the event along with several more hours spent emailing and contacting event participants and sponsors. If you are someone who is still on the fence about joining the event, time is getting short but we have space and would welcome you as either a hole advertiser or participant or even better yet, both! Visit the website and sign up!
Until next time, continued best wishes for you and your family’s health and safety.
Congratulations to Ms. Maggie Kendhammer (LaCrosse, WI). She will be completing her senior year in the packaging program at UW-Stout.
The IoPP - Wisconsin chapter is excited to announce the Annual Golf Outing Scramble is set for Friday, August 20, 2021 and Royal St. Patrick's golf course in Wrightstown, WI. Registration and Hole Sponsorships are now open! Register today so you don't miss out.
UW-Stout Scholarship Update
The IoPP - Wisconsin chapter has been providing scholarship opportunities to UW-Stout since 1998 and the tradition continues throughout the current pandemic! Thank you for your continued support at the annual golf outing fundraiser and please consider joining us this fall as we continue striving toward our next scholarship goal which is to create an endowment fund. More information can be found on our event page for the golf outing with updates as we get closer to the event in the fall.
Thank you to everybody who was involved in helping continue the Wisconsin IoPP Packaging Scholarship at UW-Stout!
Fox Valley & Wisconsin Chapters announce Merger
Recently, the leaders from the Fox Valley and Wisconsin IoPP Chapters met with our Regional IoPP Vice President and two IoPP National officers to discuss the future of the two chapters. The focus of the discussion was around:
Less involvement and participation in chapter leadership positions which has resulted in poor event planning and reduced participation at related chapter events.
The need for having two IoPP chapters in the state of Wisconsin.
In an effort to revitalize the chapters and form a unified membership roster, the chapter leaders are merging into one chapter. The combined group would use the Wisconsin IoPP Chapter name which accurately describes the geographical location of the chapter.
Merging the chapters will provide wide-ranging resources to support a unified chapter and permit the expansion of our ability to provide more frequent and purposeful chapter events. The IoPP National officers support this effort and will help facilitate the change as we move forward with the merge.
The leaders have targeted January 2021 as the anticipated date to complete the merge. This will allow both chapters adequate time to complete the 2020 calendar year events and conclude financial matters.
We encourage the members, supporters and affiliates of both chapters to provide feedback and/or suggestions related to the merge.
Please feel free to reach out directly to either of us, or any of the chapter officers, with your comments.
